Marvel Reveals Synopses for First What If...? Season 2 Episodes

Your Nerd Side (Fonseca on vacation show is back 2024)

Following an early press screening, Marvel's website officially dropped the synopses for What If...?'s upcoming season premiere and third episode, respectively. The premiere, titled "What If… Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?," envisions "a world where Ronan deposes Thanos long before the events of Infinity War," with Nebula becoming a member of the intergalactic police force and "desperate to escape her father's shadow, [as] she sets out to prove her detective chops." By contrast, episode three, "What If Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?," will see Iron Man 2 villain Justin Hammer lay "siege to Avengers Tower during the annual holiday party," forcing Hogan to thwart his plans but, "in setting out to prove his hero chops, Iron Man's errand boy may end up transforming himself in more ways than one."

While What If...?'s trailer featured glimpses of Nebula's story, it ended on an extended clip of Hogan (Jon Favreau) calling Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) about his situation and its overt parallels to Die Hard. Other storylines sprinkled throughout the trailer included an early Avengers-like roster -- consisting of Hank Pym Mar-Vell, and the Winter Soldier, amongst others -- fighting young Peter Quill and Hela teaming up with Shang-Chi's Wenwu to battle Odin, as well as season 1's cut Gamora/Tony Stark episode and a follow-up to the season's Captain Carter post-credit scene. On top of existing Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, the season will introduce an original character named Kahhori, a Mohawk woman from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy who discovers the Tesseract and becomes infused with its power.

More Marvel Shows Are Coming to Disney+

Though Marvel Studios recently pushed back the release dates for multiple shows and films, it's still working on a handful of original animated series for the Phase 5 timeline. On top of What If...?, the press event confirmed a new Black Panther-themed show called Eyes of Wakanda, teasing, "Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story."

Other upcoming animated programs include X-Men '97 -- a revival of the iconic X-Men: The Animated Series -- with much of its original cast retuning, as well as Spider-Man: Freshman Year and Marvel Zombies. Confirmed MCU actors for these new series include Charlie Cox as Freshman Year's Daredevil and Iman Vellani as Marvel Zombies' Kamala Khan, who recently said that "Kamala is kind of the center of the show. They described it to me, it's like, 'She's basically the Frodo of the story.' And I was like, 'That's amazing.'"

What If...? Season 2 will premiere on Dec. 22 on Disney+, with a new episode releasing daily until Dec. 30.
