Disney+ Sets Boba Fett Special for Star Wars Day

A new special centered on Boba Fett is coming to Disney+ on Star Wars Day.

Disney Gallery: The Book of Boba Fett will take cues from past Disney Gallery specials by taking fans behind the scenes of the most recent live-action Star Wars series. Per the official synopsis, "Disney Gallery: The Book of Boba Fett explores the behind-the-scenes story of the legendary bounty hunter’s return to Tatooine with mercenary Fennec Shand, seeking to claim the territory once run by Jabba the Hutt. In this insightful new special, filmmakers, cast and crew reveal never-before-seen footage, groundbreaking technology and the practical effects that brought it all to life." The special arrives -- fittingly -- on May 4, aka Star Wars Day.

Premiering in December 2021, The Book of Boba Fett showed fans what happened to the fan-favorite bounty hunter after he was knocked into the sarlacc pit in Return of the Jedi. While the flashbacks showed his escape from the maw of the beast and his kinship with the Tusken Raiders, the show also dealt with the aftermath of The Mandalorian Season 2, with many dubbing the back half of The Book of Boba Fett an unofficial Mandalorian Season 2.5.

"[I] can’t say anything about it at all right now, but it’s coming out in December… Wait until you see what’s coming," executive producer Robert Rodriguez teased in August 2021, several months before The Book of Boba Fett premiered. "It’s going to blow your mind. That’s all I can say. I can talk it up all I want because I know it over-delivers. It way over-delivers. People are going to be so pumped when they see it."

Prior to the show's debut, Fennec Shand actor Ming-Na Wen also promised that, despite making Boba Fett the star of his own series, he would remain an antihero at his core. "They're bonded by the fact that they both lived through a near-death experience," she said. "And there is a sense of code that they both abide by," she said. "So it's going to be really interesting to see how their dynamics grow in The Book of Boba Fett. I think that's all I can say. The rest is... you have to watch. Not that they're the bad guys. They're not that good either. We are the anti-hero. I like playing an anti-hero. You get away with more, I think."
